Make something, and make it with love. destroy something, and destroy it with relish.
It’s important to clean up, but as a former clean freak, I found that leaving messes in my studio was important. When I left pencil shavings, spills, apple cores, scraps, materials, scribbles, wrappers, various containers of substances, it was evidence of my labor. Appreciation for the itchy brain, bouncing from an oil pastel drawing to a blog post, I needed chaos to be creative.
Make something, and make it with love. Or destroy something, and destroy it with relish.
An aside: What’s the difference between a task and a project? While tidying up after a task might be good for workflow, projects need space. Projects need mess.
Projects need mess
Another point: Don’t let the small things run the show.
Make a physical thing with an emphasis on “make.” Your hands should be acting. Since we all have to eat, a common “making” activity is cooking. “Making” is a creative act, which will be different for everyone. Playing music is a creative act for some, while playing a sport is for others. (You “make” the shot into the basket or “make” a play.)
Making helps you be present in your body.
So go hang out with your body and make something! 💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫
